Landy’s note: This song means a lot to me! It’s the original song that kicked off this translation project. Both because of how beautifully it captures Domon & Rain’s characters, and because it (and the show) was the first time I remember seeing Hong Kong so thoroughly celebrated in its depiction. It described the place my family originated from, but that I had never known growing up in the states The song also has additional significance to me after the events during the year 2021.

The melodic, poetic portions in the second half remain memorable years after I first heard them – such an unexpected contrast with how silly the song opens! Years ago, I remember reading rough translations for the second half that used to be online, and being struck by their beauty – even with how roughly translated they were. I could tell there was beautiful meaning behind the words, even if I didn’t understand the exact wording in the original lyrics. Badbee’s new translations give us a closer vision of the original intention behind the lyrics, and I’ve fallen in love with them all over again!

Domon Kasshu:
If I don’t eat SONSON my stomach is full!
Fill up on Cantonese food
Shark fin! Shrimp from Ise!
Bird’s nest soup…!
I’m looking at the guide map but
the shops, where the shops are
I just don’t know!
No matter how much I listen to the puppy in the taxi
I just can’t, I just can’t make any sense
of its words!
Before I’d noticed it, I’ve gotten lost!
The police station, where the police station is,
I just don’t know!
To think my tummy has gotten this empty,
Anyway, anyway,
let’s get something to eat at a food cart!

Rain Mikamura:
I’ve gotta buy it SONSON only popular things!
Only brand goods are popular!
There are! There are cheap things!
Cashmere! Jewels! Leather goods…!
I’m looking at the guide map, but
the shops, where the shops are
I just don’t know!
A suspicious auntie laughing at me
a mountain of bags, take a bag and come here!
Before I’d noticed it, I wound up buying it!
Real thing, fake thing, real thing
I just don’t know!
I haven’t bought, haven’t bought souvenirs
What should I do!
Let’s buy some oolong tea at the airport and go home!

Rain:
Niihao! I am
a you that is rich
very, very, very, well-liked

Domon:
Embraced by the scent of jasmine tea
Riding on the Star Ferry with you
Rain:
Lights of a million-dollar skyline
I watched your cheek come near

Together:
Asia’s…paradise…
A blooming…romance…
A paradise…for two…
Hong Kong…where love blooms…

Domon:
A waitress in a
china dress
A restaurant floating on the water
Rain:
Forget, too, about making a reservation
Always watching the skyline

Together:
Asia’s…paradise…
A blooming…romance…
A paradise…for two…
Hong Kong…where love blooms…

Asia’s…paradise…
A vacation where dreams…come true…
A paradise…for two…
“Hong Kong”

Asia’s…paradise…
A blooming…romance…
A paradise…for two…
Hong Kong…where love blooms…

Asia’s…paradise…
A blooming…romance…
A paradise…for two…
Hong Kong…where love blooms…
