I recently started a commission project I’m excited about, and thought it might be fun to chronicle the process here! I’d like to try and do things like this more on this blog. I plan to update this post with future progress of this piece, Thank you very much again to the commissioner for such...Continue Reading
During October, I tried a self-prompt monthly challenge that I decided to call “Paint-ober!” I checked to see if this was an official or unofficial prompt anywhere, and didn’t find much for it. I’m sure it’s been participated in before, but it doesn’t seem to be very popular. I’ve never been interested in completing a...Continue Reading
I really enjoy using ZBrush as a kind of digital maquette – it was fun to explore the possibilities for Vaknaa’s design this way. Particularly with her head crest feathers. The above painting is painted over a rough sculpture of her. This is another sculpt+paint of Vaknaa. The rest are sculpt+paintings of Aurelle. The hair...Continue Reading
I ended up doing a few sculpts this past spring/summer, enough to split the ZBrush sculpts into two posts! In this one I’ll post a few of the GW2-related posts. Guild Wars 2 Charr Guardian Sculpt+Paint Guild Wars 2 Charr Guardian sculpt+paint. Sculpt for the above sculpt+paint! Click on the thumbnails...Continue Reading
Earlier this year, I had a hankering to try and learn 3D sculpting. ZBrush is the go-to program for this, but because I wasn’t sure the laptop I was using could handle it, I became interested to try Blender first. I was also interested in checking out Blender’s sculpting tools, because I had heard they’ve...Continue Reading
I was inspired to paint after seeing the new mount option in Guild Wars 2! It’s a “roadrunner mount,” but I was very excited because it reminded me of a mount idea I had a while back: This mount idea is based off a greater prairie chicken, which is one of my favorite chickens! They...Continue Reading
Wow! It’s been five years since my last post to my sketchblog. Are blogs still a thing? Do I even know anyone who still keeps a blog? I don’t think I do! I’m kind of drawn to the relative anonymity this blog must have now. I loved blogging, and the only reason I stopped was...Continue Reading
The commission I’m currently working on uses a lot of dark values, and I am having a heck of a time trying to see the details in it when it’s so bright and sunny today. Did some idle doodling instead while seeing if some cloud cover would roll in, but I think I’ll have to...Continue Reading
Late night sketch before sleeping. Not my best composition, but it was fun to sketch.
Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays! To commemorate the soon-to-be started New Year, I managed to do a summary of art compilation this year. I like doing these, but haven’t put one together for a year or two. I actually made the layout to this in 2013 with the artwork I did that year, but I...Continue Reading
Oh my gosh, why is it so hot tonight. Here’s a portrait of Exodus finished toward the end of summer. I changed his ears to be more goat-like, as I want his species to mainly have goat and ram influences. The horns were originally going to be some kind of armor (I know, armor on...Continue Reading
Some fan art of Sheik’s Hyrule Warriors design from about a month ago! Made a process video of it, and uploaded it to YouTube: It always kind of amazes me how much I enjoy video editing when it’s just for fun, and not for work/a job. I’m making some hastily put together ref sheets for...Continue Reading
Finally finished the cat soldier :) Some closeups: Started this sketch on Sunday. Need to work the composition, particularly the lower right corner.
Some recently finished work: The humanoid form of my dog character. I’ve always had trouble drawing him in this form because of the dark eyes, think this is the closest attempt so far :) Spontaneous illustration featuring Hollis Fan art of Murkoph from Ashley Cope’s wonderful Unsounded webcomic :)
I recently remembered this sketch I did back in February (the sketch is below) that I meant to finish but had forgotten about until I remembered it while falling asleep last night. Thought it’d be fun to finish it now!
I don’t know why I’m too lazy to take progress jpegs of things haha, probably because it clutters things up in Bridge. Here’s a sloppily cropped wip of one: Corveil and Hollis. Another unplanned drawing that I ended up rendering, so the full composition bothers me :(
Did this sketch earlier today, I think it was about 2-3 hours at the most? It started out Vale-like – I just really like this hairstyle – but I didn’t want another animal-eared image. So this is either an example of the kind of citizen who lives in Vice’s country, or even his sister. I...Continue Reading
This is one I started at the beginning of the month, but I really disliked the colors. I tried to remedy some things today: Here’s how it looked before: Something about it still dissatisfies me, though – I think when I did the original drawing I didn’t plan it very well so the composition is...Continue Reading
I did this supposed-to-be-a-quick-sketch that I spent longer on that I should have. You know how they say to add a figure to add interest to landscape/environment images, but this – looks much better to me – than this. I even tried moving the hawkman around (he was originally much larger and in the top-half...Continue Reading
I was pretty productive today! This is a very quickly done character concept, I don’t think it was more than 3 hours. It still needs to be refined. This was the first thing I colored today. I wanted to sketch and try a more relaxed technique of just starting with color, adding line occasionally on...Continue Reading
Update: I didn’t work on it that much more yet, but here’s how it looks now. Color sketch of Elsium from the other day that I disliked where it was going. One reason being he looks rather fat/pregnant, hah. This was a very quick environment/color sketch, but I like how it turned out.
Boy do I love sushi, but it sure makes me feel unproductive, and … yawwwn … tired. Going to bed now. Update 2: I had tamagoyaki, soba noodles, eel rolls, lots of different kinds of masago, an amazing cabbage salad with peanuts… ahhh.
I forgot I also started this last night. I’ve finally got a name for this character. Vale! One of my few girl characters who actually looks somewhat girly.
Three-legged bird Relatively quick sketch drawing Noel with her giant stuffed bird friend And again Trying out a new brush
Red dragon sketch Crop from a potential wip Wanted to try drawing a dress. Sketch of Noel with the bird character Random doodle
Started quite a while ago, but picked it up again and think I’m finished with it. Drumstick! On a living creature this time.
Can’t draw dragons yet one scribbles itself out once in a while. It makes them cry. Random bird creature
About an hour Elsium, a character design. 30 minute sketch before bed of Exodus Scene idea depicting Elsium Quick idea Arquel vs some mechanical thing Long doodle of a cheerful skullbird Idea for a bird mount based off the Greater Prairie Chicken Drawing from several months ago, couldn’t decide if it...Continue Reading
Edit: Oh this is wonderful! It’s so easy to rough in color this way. I am very happy :) It’s great for sketching ideas. I don’t know how much/if I’ll use it on finished pieces, though.
I don’t know what I’m doing, but it’s fun to try these. Click for a slightly larger, unblurry version. Totally don’t know what I’m doing here Sketch sketch
More random designs! These are relaxing to do at the end of the day. This brush is very fun! A little hard to control, but think I’m getting a feel for it.
Two random birdlike concepts. The left one started with some scribbles without much thought and it turned into a vaguely wrathlike thing, and it just developed from there. It’s a ram man I’ve been able to head out to the east end of LI a couple times recently, and took some photographs and videos of...Continue Reading
Bird creature. It’s mostly done but it still needs some small refinements (mostly the hands). I’m trying to develop a design that merges a bird form with a human figure without it being extremely creepy. I did a colored one a while ago that was way too human, and it even creeped me out in...Continue Reading
I did the basic shape of this while having a sporadic email-chat conversation, so it’s not as clear as it should be.
Did a shortish dragon fruit still-life study tonight. I wasn’t planning to since I am extremely tired today, but I wanted to do a little in case they don’t look as fresh tomorrow. They are so gorgeous fresh. Ever since I painted the onion, I’ve been drooling to paint a dragon fruit. They have the...Continue Reading
I was looking at some onions after dinner and felt like doing a short observational drawing. One layer, no adjustment layers or filters or anything, one simple brush (a square brush) – really basic. It’s been forever since I’ve done an observational drawing that wasn’t a quick gesture, this was fun.
And this was from earlier today: Made another fun brush. Fast sketchpaint to try it out. No reference, very obviously, haha.
I was too tired last week to upload these, some really simple and quick sky/sunset sketches from last weekend. Some imagined, some from photos, one from observation. They’re roughly ordered from the last one I did to the first. Imagined Imagined Looked at a photo for the colors From a photo Outside my window. It’s...Continue Reading
10/15 Update Revised the little Belgian Bantam ;) Older version in the full post.
Another chicken study from that chicken encyclopedia of mine, this time of a Japanese Bantam.
finished an art trade of my friend’s characters (: it was good practice for action poses, which i need to work on more
Version with close-up Finished the drawing! Again, this is Sette from the webcomic Unsounded. Had a lot of fun coloring this one, think I learned some new things. Namely, some color restraint. Original WIP Post: Working on some fan art for Ashley Cope’s newly launched webcomic, Unsounded, which you should go read RIGHT THIS MINUTE...Continue Reading
Paint sketch-things of some mountain-like things with inaccurate lighting. I’ve never done a landscape like this before, but someone showed me another artist’s process that made me want to give it a quick try. Click the link to see more.
Doodle that I decided to finish, it was fun coloring practice. I can’t believe I drew it again, I wasn’t intending to, but its design is so fun it just happens.
Why, if you had a tongue like this, you’d have a friend wherever you went! Quick doodle, considering coloring it because … it makes me smile.
I made this for .. well, we’re not technically related, but I would consider her my niece. :) She’s the two-year-old daughter of a close family friend. It’s her birthday tomorrow, and earlier in the week my mom joking said to make her a plush toy, and today decided to try it. I’m happy I...Continue Reading
I must admit that it is incredibly fun to line stuff using SAI. I haven’t done a clean, “inked” drawing like this in years. Planning to color it soon.
Yeah, I know. But these small paintings are really fun to try different coloring styles. I wanted to see if I could color this small thing quickly. I’m still not fast but I think I’m getting faster .. somewhat. Coloring with Gimp is so much more fun than Photoshop, it’s ridiculous. ;_;
Edit: Think it’s done now. /edit A quick concept I wanted to get down, inspired by the cube-filter effect from the Pet Shop Boys Cubism: In Concert (2007). And here’s an alt version: I thought it was getting too busy, so I stripped it back down to the above. I feel like there’s something missing...Continue Reading
Looking at the computer has been giving me headaches/making me feel sick for the past week, so while I’ve been off it I’ve been trying my hand at some plushies. Tessa has been making really cute keychain-sized plushies, and it made me really curious to try, even though I haven’t sewn since middle school (and...Continue Reading
Well, this first one is Alchemy (an open-source/free drawing program) with some Gimp (an open-source/free digital painting program) paintover. I had a lot of fun with Alchemy. Just let the chaos take over, and it turned into a fish. :) I like the sharpness of this Alchemy tool. :O
Hoatzin pencil sketch/study. A Hoatzin is a type of cuckoo! A very pretty one at that. It’s the punk bird of the cuckoo world. It’s amazing how much more fun drawing can be on different types of paper. This is on a lightweight watercolor paper.
Before I switched to a Mac, there was a small, lightweight, little-known app called OpenCanvas that was my digital paint program of choice. As OpenCanvas is not Mac supported, my Mac forced me to learn Photoshop. I’m glad it did, as I grew to really love working with Photoshop. But, I always wondered about OpenCanvas....Continue Reading
I did some ink drawings to try out my new Staedler pen. Over Christmas, I received this wonderful reference book of all kinds of different birds from around the world. I went through and chose the weirdest ones that I knew would be fun to draw, so these are all referenced from that wonderful book....Continue Reading
There’s this old sculpture of a toucan that’s been sitting on my desk behind my computer for a while. I made it a few years ago out of some kind of water-based clay and did not think it turned out very well, so I thought it’d be fun to practice painting on. I’m sorry these...Continue Reading
Cropping of a late night sketch. I plan to finish this one! Since it is already pretty simple. I’ve been much busier than I’d been anticipating. I’ve done a lot of unfinished sketch things that I might post if I clean them up a bit, and I should be able to finish some little animations...Continue Reading
I have been pretty busy this past week with moving and seeing friends before leaving. But now I’m back home. :) Spent most of the day organizing 4 years worth of junk, but here are some late night sketches: Need to tweak the perspective in this one. Sketch of a boy figure. He kind of...Continue Reading
